Gildenhuys Lessing Malatji Incorporated ("GLM") is a firm of attorneys based in Groenkloof, Pretoria. The firm has been in existence since the 1950’s. It derives its current form from an amalgamation of two prominent firms; Gildenhuys Inc, founded by Judge Antonie Gildenhuys and the Pretoria branch of Hofmeyr van der Merwe (now part of the amalgamated law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr).

The firm’s uniqueness is borne out by the three pillars which underpins our overall approach and strategy. These include a high premium on the personal well–being and development of our lawyers and their support staff. Our people are thus our first and most important pillar of success. We also believe in offering our clients legal health by mastering our clients’ business and the environment within which they operate. In this way we are able to partner with our clients in pursuing their strategic imperatives whilst assisting them in steering from the legal challenges encountered in the ordinary course of business. This innovative alternative to legal services offering is our second pillar of success.

GLM is proudly a truly South African Law Firm. We have managed to achieve demographic diversity which emulates the South African miracle. This places us at the forefront of transformation in the legal services sector and we have become an employer of choice in the legal field. This latter attribute is the third pillar and the strength in diversity we speak of in our mission statement. GLM has moved from the humble beginnings of a single black director in the late 1990’s to a majority black owned law firm.

As at June 2009, our black economic empowerment milestones include: 8 of our 19 Directors are black; 27 of our 55 lawyers are black; 26 of 55 lawyers are female; 64 of our total staff compliment of 122 are black. We are 51% black owned and 11% black female owned. We have an “AA” rating by Empowerdex which denotes a good contributor to Black Economic Empowerment, measured against all imperatives set out in the BEE scorecard.

The firm has succeeded in bringing together experience extending over five decades and quality black legal expertise. In light of this recognised success, we are a major advisor in both the public sector and to the corporate world. We are able to bring a world of experience gained from our advisory role in the public sector to the corporate world and in so doing ensure that the corporate world attains and maintains legal health, given the regulatory environment in which business operates.
